Meet Angel Fonseca, a photography student at Ryerson University. Fonseca's crisp shots capture the vibrancy in stillness in everyday life. It is through his work Fonseca can capture beauty and simplicity in a way that gives without words. In a brief interview, I asked about future endeavours, inspiration, and advice to aspiring photographers.
What are you currently attending school for, and what you want to do once you are finished?
The school I’m currently attending is Ryerson University for the program Image arts: Photography studies. After I finish school I want to be able to do commercial shoots or possibly teach. I photograph with film and digital. However, I’ve been shooting more film since that's the route I want to go towards.
What got you into photography?
I got into photography when my brother got me into skateboarding, and I’d make skateboarding videos. I loved watching other skateboarders on youtube or DVD's and got inspired by the fisheye and the aesthetics, and I wanted to replicate that. I have always loved photography as a kid as well, so I began shooting in 2015.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from many different places, including my culture, different forms of art, and other photographers across the globe. Seeing these things inspire me to be able to create something as unique as what I see but in my own way.

What is your favourite shot, where was it taken, and why?
My favourite shot has to be the first McDonald’s in Los Angeles when I visited in the summer of 2019. It is still intact from when it had initially opened and has a unique vintage vibe.
What is something you wish you knew when you started taking photos, and what would you tell others that want to go into the same medium?
I would tell others to take creative risks and experiment. If you have an idea that you think is great, I would say go for it. Don’t let other people talk you out of it. Go out there and express yourself. I would advise learning from other photographs, they tend to give you great advice that can be used towards your art. What I wish I knew was that self-expression through your photographs is key. I have a learning disability in writing and reading, so I find photography the easiest way to express myself in a way that works for me. It can be a fun hobby or passion, we all have to start somewhere. Happy shooting!
